Hello Leute!
Sorry, but I am in a rush and so will write this in English. I am in Thredbo Australia, and this would be the worst season in a very long time. The problem with the weather is the high pressure systems are too far south. This brings in warm air from the north, and causes rain instead of snow. Add to this that there is a drought and very little rain, and you get a big problem. However, it is also good news for New Zealand (if you like lots and lots of snow). It causes them to get more. However, last year when Australia had snow, New Zealand had none. This year in Australia, any snow that arrives has also been met with rain afterwards.
Here is a snow chart from Hotham (Australia), which is in Victoria (the state which Melbourne is in).
Victoria has a lot less snow than New South Wales (NSW) which is the state north of it which contains Sydney. The resorts Thredbo and Perisher Blue are in NSW and Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buller are in Victoria. Thredbo has been very lucky as they just placed in computer controlled snow making, and it has keep the mains runs in great shape. When the temperatures are very marginal, it makes a massive difference when you can turn guns off or on in 15 seconds compared to 50 minutes. Mt Buller does not have computer controlled snow making, but the problem is worse for them. They have no water in the village, which means they are worried about drinking water more than snow making.
However, in the last week it has snowed a little down here. So things are getting a little better, but the freezing level is still too high. In NSW they also use cloud seeding. This helps the flakes fall to a lower level, with more snow etc... But it has not been able to do much this year.

^^ thank for the infos, I saw that in the past days down under (in Australia) was dumping and mostly resorts become some freshies.
hmm.. this cloud seeding is for me absolutely new, I never thought that they make this type of weather modification in the resorts, or maybe it will be better if I say: above the resorts interesting thing..
ps.: are you working in Thredbo or are you as tourist there?

It started snowing heavily this afternoon again, but not for long. I live in Thredbo for the winters, but for sport must travel around Australia and New Zealand, then overseas for my summer (which becomes another winter ).

und es geht weiter
ganz frische Bilder aus La Parva (Los Tres Valles-Chile)
alle Bilder sind vom den vergangenen WE (28.-29. Juli).

In Australia the mountains are called the Snowy Mountains. They are in the middle of the great dividing range, which runs from around Melbourne, up past Sydney (which is the Blue Mountains, cause they look blue in the sun when the eucalyptus oil evaporates off the gum trees), then past Brisbane and up the coast to Cairns. The Snowy Mountains had a lot of water running of to the east, so they decided in the 50's to make the Snowy Scheme (which is one of the engineering wonders of the world), which moves the water over to the west. This water forms the Murry and other few rivers, which are the biggest in Australia. This is important for agriculture, and generates a lot of electricity at the same time. Sometimes the water is even pumped back up the mountains so there is more electricity in peak times (like a battery). It is also used as a backup, so if power goes down somewhere in the main cities, it can be brought back up in a matter of seconds. More of the power stations were meant to be underground, but since Australia had been so safe from attack and war, it was decided the rest could be built outside (so only a few are underground).Stani hat geschrieben:thx the link above! I geez that, the winter precipitation in the Australian Alps is really important! and that's not only for the skiresorts, but also for the agriculture on the plains.
The cloud seeding is being down by snowy hydro (the power company owned by the governments) to get more water down the Murry and other rivers in summer, and a bit more power which pays for it. But in order to do it, they had to pass new laws to be allowed to mess with the weather. This also meant they had to prove the rain fall behind the snowy mountains would not be affected. So far it has shown to be very successful, even in a time of drought for over 8 years. This year would of be very bad without it. However, the snowy scheme has not been all good for the snow. The water in some lakes gets warmed up in the long summers, and can place out more heat in winter. However, with the cloud seeding, it should help move water through the lakes and reduce the problem. The end of the drought would do a lot for this too.

Sorry mein PC spinnt heute total.
