Olympialiften revamped

The construction work on the new Olympia lift is in full swing. The new lift will be the first of its kind in the world.

This will be the first Telemix lift in the world, with room for eight persons in each chair and gondola. The lift is planned to be completed by 15 November, in time for the new season when you will be able to choose between a chair and a gondola for your transport to the Olympiaplatån.

What is a Telemix lift?
It is a lift that combines chairs and gondolas; this version will have 64 chairs and 16 gondolas.

Why a Telemix lift?
One reason is that Olympia is one of the main transporters up on the hill. There are also certain rules stipulating the use of a chairlift: one has to be at least 140 cm tall or a minimum of 8 years of age. With the new lift, even the youngest skiers can travel uphill using the gondolas. This also makes it easier for the ski school groups.

Increased capacity With the new lift the capacity in the Olympia area will almost double. The objective of the investment was to be able to transport 3 400 persons per hour which led to the choice of this Telemix lift from Leitner.

The construction work
At present, some 25 to 30 workers are building the new lift. Construction work in such steep terrain as this adds certain requirements on their skills; not everyone is capable of handling large excavators in the same terrain where we otherwise ski.

Most of the work is done in the same way as on any normal construction site. The difference here is that some transports must be done by helicopter. There is also an additional type of profession which is rare at other building sites: the splicer who splices together the ends of the lift cable so that it can pull the chairs and gondolas. The new lift will run in the same stretch as the old Olympia lift.

What will happen to the old Olympia lift?
The work on dismantling the old lift started the day after we closed the ski area for the season. It has been taken down piece by piece and transported to Finland where it will be rebuilt. The dismantling took five weeks.

It may sound odd to deselect a lift at one ski resort while another destination wants to operate it. This is however quite common, usually based on requirements in terms of capacity.

Leitner ist Technical Supplier der Alpinen Skiweltmeisterschaften 2007 in Schweden. Das Städtchen Åre, nahe Östersund, wird vom 2. bis 18. Februar 2007 die Weltmeisterschaften im alpinen Skisport ausrichten.

Vor mehr als 50 Jahren begann die erfolgreiche Geschichte dieses mittlerweile größten Skiresorts Schwedens, das sich nun als stolzer Gastgeber von mehr als 60 Weltcuprennen präsentiert. Die Veranstalter rechnen mit 100.000 Besuchern und 600 Mio. TV-Zuschauern, auf die ein exklusives Wintersportspektakel wartet. Zu den Teilnehmern zählt neben den 350 Athleten aus 65 Nationen unter anderem und in gewissem Sinne auch Leitner. Sämtliche Wettbewerbe finden nämlich längs einer von Leitner Anfang Dezember 2006 in Betrieb genommenen Seilbahnanlage statt. Dadurch klassifiziert sich diese als wichtigste Anlage der Weltmeisterschaft, und Leitner leistet als Technical Supplier einen wichtigen Beitrag zu dieser WM. Die Bahn ersetzt eine kuppelbare 4er-Sesselbahn und kombiniert 68 Stück 8er-Sessel mit 16 Stück 8er-Kabinen. Die zentrale Rolle dieser Bahn lässt sich auch aus der Positionierung der Talstation schließen: Sie befindet sich in unmittelbarer Nähe des Zielraums und damit der Publikumstribünen. In wenigen Monaten ist es nun soweit, und die Aufmerksamkeit der Wintersportbegeisterten wird sich ganz auf die Wettkämpfe in Åre konzentrieren. Die Veranstalter versprechen ein einzigartiges Sportereignis und eine großartige Party.
