So...at 23-24 Jan. i decided to go to the annual meeting of Greek Snowclub...
The meeting was decided to take place in Karpenisi Ski Resort.
Karpenisi is a small ski resort in mid-Greece.
The village is very nice. Among forest, with nice view to the surroundings mountais, excellent scenery, nice traditional hotels etc.
Generally nice place...The ski resort is from 1.800 till 2.200 high (almost), over tree lines. It is a snow - bucket and usually has enough snow. During the days we were there the snow was almost 70-80 cm, today almost 2m. with snowstorms that keeps the resort closed. The official site mentions that the snow cover the lifts...(God knows if its true)
The temperature was always around -5 to -8 and the weather was pretty nice...sunshine...
Not so many people because of traffic problems with farmers strike (
)
So the map

The problem with the resort is that they dont care about it.
During our stay only the platelift works the first day...a small slope, near 500 m.
The second date, the same... they opened one chairlift at 13.00...just one....
So while i was waiting to take the lift, the staff of the resort told us, that we have to leave one chair, and take the next...every one....not take every chair, because they didnt know if the rope will hold the chairs if it works with 100% capacity...so we have to leave the 50% of the chairs empty...
of course, after that, i take my board, my wife and go home...never again in this resort...too bad...a nice place, a nice resort, but not so nice (or clever?) people...
a few pics will follow...

Pictures which a normal central european will never expect from Greece! You know, the image there is white houses with blue roofs on a sunny mediteranian island, beaches and historic temples.
The ski area doesn't look too bad, it's a pity that they are so lazy there! Lot of Graffer lifts, isn't it?

Yes..the ski area is very good...but...
I think you are right...Graffer lifts...i didnt pay attention, so i am not 100% sure...
I know that to most of you, its kind of strange to see pics like these from Greece...
Tomorrow i will post some pics, from another resort...the only one in GR, which is capable for 100% artificial snow cover...

But not for Alpinforum members! You know, I worked at a travel agency once. If I show such pictures to a standard tourist and than declare that they were taken in greece, they will not believe me!

Hello Turms,
Great to see Greek ski pictures
.
My girlfriend and I will be in Delphi the last week of February and we will go skiing in Parnassos (if there is snow left
). Probably will be a great experience.

naa...generally is ok...but the weekends is not so good....its is not so nice to wait 25-30 min. for a small descent of 5 min...if you go e.g. Monday, then it is perfect...

look...this winter is not so good for Greece...all the cold is in W.Europe...
but you never know...in normal situation Feb. is very good for Parnassos...think that last winter Parnassos closed at 14 May...
Kaimaktsalan in N.Greece closed around mid-April because of lack of skiers...not for lack of snow...
PS try to go mid-week...not Saturday, and NOT SUNDAY....

yeah, somewhere over the internet I've read it's really bad during weekends.
We will be in Athens till sunday, then drive to Delphi and ski on monday and/or tuesday and/or wednesday. It depends on the weather/snow/road conditions.

How strange. Are there no laws concerning ropeways? Something like TÜV in Germany/Austria?

Yes...they have to take a certification from a specific Minister, after they made inspection and all the process to ensure that they are safe....but...

Really great pictures. As a matter of fact I planned to go to Greece for skiing since the 80s, but I never managed to realize it.....
